  • DC doctoral student David Dani received a graduate fellowship for drinking water quality and technology research from Malcom Pirnie, Inc headquartered in White Plains, NY

  • Profs. Angela Bielefeldt and Scott R. Summers received a Lindbergh Foundation Grant for their work on evaluating the effectiveness and lifespan of home water filters.

  • Prof. Bernard Amadei featured in TIME Magazine (The Power of One): Blueprint Brigade and PBS NewsHour.

  • ApproVideo provides a collection of short videos illustrating a wide range of sustainable and appropriate solutions for developing communities worldwide. 

  • The EDC team expands to include Dr. Barry Bialek, MD, Dr. Barry Karlin, PhD, Dr. Rira Klees PhD, and Dr. David Silver, MD, MPH

Education

  • Sustainable Community Development six-credit hour graduate course to be offered over a period of two semesters in fall 2008 (SCD 1) and spring 2009 (SCD 2) by Drs. David Silver and Bernard Amadei.
  • CU-Boulder's graduate energy certificate program provides a broad exposure to energy issues, with emphasis on renewable and sustainable energy.An undergraduate energy certificate program has also been approved.
  • Social Entrepreneurship in Emerging Markets offered during the summer 2008 session (02/06-03/07)
  • For graduate students, an EDC track is available in the MS/PhD program in Environmental Engineering. EDC can also be custom designed as an emphasis area in the Building Systems program and the Construction Engineering and Management program. Students interested in EDC must apply through the CEAE Department (application process) and mention their interest in EDC graduate studies.
  • For CVEN students, an  EDC track allows undergraduate students to follow a typical CVEN curriculum and emphasize the developing world in their socio-humanistic, technical electives. The students focus their senior design project activities on issues relevant to developing communities and sustainable development.
  • Successful GIS training and PV Training in Kabul in 2007 to continue in 2008.
  • Visiting scholars Mr. Jan Aqa Satar from Kabul Polytechnic University and Mr. Akbar Omar Khaja are studying engineering geology and sustainable carpet making in Boulder.

Outreach/Services/Projects

  • Plans are underway for EDC/EWB-CU teams to conduct projects in 2008 in Rwanda, Nepal, and Peru

  • EDC students are developing a new initiative in Chile entitled "Engineering for Developing Communities: Synergy of the Americas". Read more...

  • In Iquitos, Peru, the EDC Program is working with Centura Health’s Missions and Community Health Program to establish a communication link between a medical clinic in the Amazon jungle and the Clinica Adventista Ana Stahl in Iquitos, Peru. Project design will be guided by WiFi systems currently in operation in the high Amazon region. Read more..

  • In Afghanistan, EDC is working with the Center for Advanced Engineering and Technology Education (CAETE) at CU Boulder and the Afghan e-Quality Alliance based at Washington State University to provide scholarships to young engineering faculty members in six Afghan universities. The scholarships will allow young engineering faculty in Afghanistan to study toward certification in Telecommunications, Engineering Management or Electrical and Computer Engineering. All certificates courses are offered online through CAETE.

  • EDC received a NCIIA Sustainable Vision grant for "Developing a Replicable Model for Sustainable Technology Entrepreneurship in Afghanistan"
