Research and Development

  • The Center for Drinking Water Optimization continues to study the effectiveness of the Filtrón water purifier system developed by Potters for Peace in Nicaragua
  • EDC faculty and students are working on two research projects supported by EPA P3 grants
    in 2005-2006: (i) Sustainability of the Filtrón for Microbial Disinfection, conducted by Jay Shah under the supervision of Profs. Scott Summers and Angela Bielefeldt; (ii) A Green Mind: A Sustainable, Smart Growth Plan for Muramba, Rwanda conducted by Evan Thomas and members of the EWB-CU Rwanda project under the supervision of Prof. Bernard Amadei.


Outreach/Services/Projects

  • As part of CVEN 4830, 4434/5434 in fall 2006, twelve students in three teams are working on a wastewater treatment/reuse design for a community in Sonora, Mexico.  Nine students traveled to the community over four days in October, to meet with community leaders and gather data to better understand the scope of the problem. 
  • Over 30 CU students from EWB-CU are actively involved in projects in Rwanda and Peru.
  • In August 2006, the EWB-CU Peru team traveled to San Leon for phase 1 implementation of their water project consisting of installation of water well, hand pump and storage tank.
  • In June 2006, the EWB-CU Rwanda team traveled to Muramba (Gisenyi) and Muganero (Kibuye)to install water purification, biogas, and rain water catchment systems. Check project summary.
  • In January 2006, the EWB-CU Peru team continued its implementation of a potable water system and explored how to use a network of 500 internet cafes in Peru for education purpose.
