DESCRIPTION
The
workshop provided a forum for engineering educators and students as
well as representatives from NGO’s, governmental agencies and
international consultants to share information and exchange ideas
regarding appropriate technology program and course development and/or
the integration of appropriate, sustainable technology concepts into
existing programs and courses. The challenges and benefits associated
with providing experiential learning by implementing service-learning
to reinforce these concepts were also discussed.
The
workshop consisted of a combination of keynote lectures, presentations, working
groups addressing more specific questions, and plenary
discussion periods. It provided a "meeting of the minds"
where participants could briefly describe what they were doing in these areas.
Facilitated discussion periods explored the strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities and implications of incorporating appropriate technology
and service-learning into their curriculum.
Breakout
sessions provided engineering educators with the opportunity to
network and exchange appropriate technology course material. Engineering
educators were also provided with the opportunity to work
together to find solutions to some of the challenges and risks
associated with incorporating appropriate technology and
service-learning into their curriculum. Opportunities for
intercollegiate collaboration on service-learning experiences were discussed and presented. Finally, the implications of including
appropriate technology and service-learning in engineering education
were discussed.
Session
topics included: university views on service-learning and
appropriate technology from a programmatic, institutional and student
perspective; viewing service-learning from the eyes of the various
stakeholders; and current happenings in service-learning and
appropriate technology course development.
